Two thirds of the earths surface is covered by water - Our carbon fibre power catamarans can safely cover all of it
News Release– September 3, 2013
Trawlercat Marine Designs (TMD) of Nova Scotia Canada announces a new series of carbon fibre High Speed Pocket Patrol Boats (HSPPB).
The HSPPBs consist of four models that have been designed to meet the needs of countries requiring improved coastal and offshore maritime surveillance and security. Available in 20m & 26m x 9m and 30m & 35m x 10.6m they are not warships and they do not carry any mounted weapons, however it is expected they will have trained and armed crew on-board to counter the weapons used by pirates.
The new HSPPBs will be employed inside the territorial waters of countries to protect their commercial interests from maritime criminal activities that include curtailing pirate activity, apprehending drug smugglers, illegal immigrants, polluting ships and foreign fishing trawlers who take millions of dollars’ worth of fish out of a country’s economy every year which makes it difficult for local fisherman to earn a living. They will also be used for Search and Rescue missions.
Carbon fibre is five times stronger than steel, ten times stronger than aluminium and less than half the weight of aluminium. The low weight allowed us to use small engines that weigh less cost less and use less fuel so they carry less fuel and save even more weight. Their performance was further improved by using a carbon fibre hydro-foil system which lifts two thirds of the hull up out of the water reducing hull surface drag. Together it results in a 50% to 75% lower fuel burn, lower greenhouse gas emissions, a higher speed and better performance than any similar size metal Navy Patrol Boat. And if that isn’t enough they are relatively inexpensive to purchase and to operate.
Their light weight and bilge keels give them a very shallow draft so we ‘designed in’ the ability to nose up to sandy beaches to deploy fully armed marines down the carbon fibre bow ramp to investigate further ashore. The two larger models can deploy eight fully armed marines in four Quad all-terrain side-by-side vehicles to drive down the bow ramp and pursue escaping suspects or to carry out searches further inshore for signs of pirate or drug activity.
Carbon fibre was the material of choice for Boeing and Airbus for the wings and fuselage of their latest passenger aircraft which is a testament to the light weight and strength of this material. This made it easy for us to decide to use it in our workboat models. Closed cell foam sandwiched with carbon fibre is used to construct the boats and as the foam is positively buoyant we ‘designed in’ additional water tight void areas to make the vessels totally UNSINKABLEand boats just don’t get any safer than this.
We have been developing these designs since 2010 and would now like to begin recouping some of our design investment. Our present strategy is to once again become our own boat builder so we are actively seeking a Global Boat Builder Business Partner willing to work with us and employ our proven production methods. We would equally welcome an Investor(s) Business Partner willing to work with us to set up in a New Global Boat Building Facility. This could be in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, the UK or the USA. A client or two coming forward and placing orders for these vessels would certainly help to expedite construction.
